Award in Germany: An Insult to Memory
To the Editor:
Re “Hitler Apologist Wins German Honor, and a Storm Breaks Out” (news article, June 21):
We, the Holocaust survivor community, are concerned that the awarding of one of Germany’s highest literary honors to Ernst Nolte is indicative of the trend to make Nazism a more palatable part of Germany’s past. Is this the way the Holocaust will be remembered in the new millennium?
For us survivors who have dedicated our life’s work to assuring that history will not be manipulated, politicized or distorted, this comes as a bolt of lightning. Still, we are somewhat encouraged by the storm in Germany that followed the award to Mr. Nolte. Those who find this a repugnant insult to memory should be heartily applauded.
