Goebbels Archives discovered at Köslin

Das Archiv bestehe hauptsächlich aus deutschen und ausländischen Presseausschnitten. Es enthalte ferner Empfehlungen zur Verwendung dieses Materials für nationalsozialistische Propagandazwecke. Gefunden worden seien auch Analysen, wie die Weltpresse auf den Massenmord an den Juden reagierte. Unter den Notizen befänden sich «mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit» persönliche Anmerkungen von Goebbels, schrieb «Trybuna».

Die Existenz des Archivs in Polen sei der Öffentlichkeit bislang nicht bekannt gewesen. Die Dokumente seien in den 50er Jahren im Zentralen Militärarchiv in Warschau und später im Staatsarchiv in Danzig aufbewahrt worden. Wie sie nach Köslin gelangt seien, sei noch nicht ganz klar. Nach der Bearbeitung würden sie Forschern zur Verfügung gestellt.

The archive consists mainly of press clippings from German and foreign newspapers, and of recommendations for exploiting this material for Nazi propaganda purposes. It is said that analyses were also found of how the world press is reacting to the massacre of the Jews. Among the notes there are “most probably” also personal annotations by Goebbels, wrote «Trybuna».

The public was unaware until now of the existence of the archive in Poland. The documents had been housed in the Central Military Archives in Warsaw in the 50s and later in the State Archive in Danzig. It is not yet clear how they made their way to Köslin. After they have been processed they will be made available to researchers. 

Our opinion

The collection does not sound of shattering importance, but it is worth noting how that other world-shattering event gets a mention.
