Summary: Israeli warplanes attacked the US radio-reconnaissance ship USS Liberty in international waters of the Mediterranean in 1967. It was clearly marked with the US flag. The US Government moved swiftly to repair relations with its Israeli allies. Controversy has surrounded the incident ever since, with deep bitterness felt by the wounded American sailors and technicians, and the next of kin of the many men who were killed.
