REL 373H: Seminar on Holocaust

Lipstadt, Thursday 2:30-5:15 (Cross-Listed with History 386G)MAX: 15, WRT: YesContent: America and the Holocaust: How did America respond to the Holocaust? What did people know and when did they know it? Could America have really done something to change the course of history? If it could have reacted who was ultimately responsible for its inaction? President Roosevelt? The Congress? What about the American Jewish community? Did it do all that was possible?

We will examine these and other questions in an attempt to get a better picture of the “home front” during the Holocaust.

Requirements: Each student will write 2-3 short papers [approximately 3 pages] and one longer research paper. Grades will be based on papers and on class participation.

REL 369: Religion and Film: Film and the Holocaust

Lipstadt/DeConcini, (Screening: M 7-10 p.m.), TTh 8:30-9:45 a.m., MAX: 20, WRT: YesContent: This course will study different themes and topics in the Holocaust, including the history of antisemitism, the rise of Nazism, Nazi antisemitic propaganda, the early acts of persecution, the death camps, resistance, rescuers, and bystanders. As a means of enhancing our understanding of this horrific event and how images contributed to it. We will view a series of films relating to the history of the Holocaust and ask what was the filmmaker’s agenda in the making of the films? We will view documentary film footage from the period, Nazi and Allied propaganda films, and post-Holocaust full length feature films. Students will learn how to analyze films critically.

Requirements: Class will meet three times a week, which includes one evening session for viewing the films. Students are required to attend all the film screenings. In addition to attendance at class and the films, students will take a mid-term and a final and write a series of short papers.
