SS Oberführer Meyer (Kdr 12 Pz Div Hitler Jugend), capt nr Liege, 7 Sep 44

TRANSLATION

Eberbach: I can't make Himmler out at all; on the one hand, because he decided to have all the Jews massacred, consciously --

SS Oberführer Meyer: "Do you know why? Himmler is the most faithful executor of the Führer's orders. The Führer used to say: "Should the Jews succeed once again in involving Europe in a war, it will not mean the destruction of the German people, but the annihilation of the Jewish race."[*]

Eberbach: "The essential thing for us Germans is to find out way back to a decent way of living. There is no other way; anything else would spell disaster and act as a boomerang."

GERMAN TEXT

Eberbach: "Himmler ist mir einer der unklarsten Leute, einerseits weil er diese ganze Judenmassakers beschloß, bewußt…"

Meyer: "Wissen Sie weshalb? Himmler ist der treueste Vollstrecker des Wortes des Führers. Der Führer hat immer gesagt: 'Sollte es dem Judentum gelingen, Europa wieder in einen Krieg zu stürzen, so bedeutet das nicht die Vernichtung des deutschen Bluts, sondern die Vernichtung der jüdischen Rasse."

Eberbach: "Was überhaupt wesentlich ist: Wir Deutschen müssen wieder zur selben Anständigkeit zurückfinden. Anders geht es nicht, alles andere geht schief und schlägt gegen uns selber zurück."
