Herbert Backe and his widow Ursula

Herbert Backe (May 1, 1896 – April 6, 1947) was a German politician and SS-Obergruppenführer. He was born in Batumi, Georgia, and was Staatssekretär im Ernährungsministerium and from May 23, 1942 acting Reichsminister. Indicted by the Americans for war crimes, he committed suicide in his cell before the Ministries Trial began. These excerpts from his private papers and those of his widow Ursula were typed by her in November 1975 for David Irving’s research for his Hitler biography Hitler’s War.
