THIS was one of the David Olère pictures not shown to the Court during the Lipstadt Trial. It betrays once again the artist’s penchant for poorly-drawn semi-pornographic nude pictures. Note the smoking crematorium chimney in the background (oddly, emerging from the main roof of the crematorium building — in Auschwitz, the chimneys are offset from the main building: see below, Crematorium III, the mirror image of Krema II where most of the gassings are alleged to have occurred ).In his Judgment, Mr Justice Gray professed himself profoundly impressed by the evidentiary quality of the Olère sketches, in the absence of any other hard documentary evidence of the atrocities committed at Auschwitz.
